10 years ago I posted my yearlist for 2007. Back in the old days I used to name my yearlists "Ze *insert year* Memoires". After all, I was a cringy teen, so logically I would give my playlist such misplaced intellectual connotations, right? Getting high on my own "unique identity" as the only kid in my school that listened to Trance and Electronic music full-stop whilst everyone else was just Pop-chart chasing sheeple without unique thoughts... Man, such conceited youthful arrogance and stupidity, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiet. xD
But, for all the cringy nonsense my younger self committed, the one thing I will always be grateful for is how at a very young age I set about to archive my favorite tracks in playlists of which I saved many back-ups. Now, in the era of Spotify and Youtube Art Tracks all that archiving is paying off in me reconstructing my library on these platforms. As a result, I get to relive the music of my youth on a consistent basis. It's... Pure delight!! I mean how good was 2007 music-wise?? Honestly, Trance has been through some very difficult phases across especially 2011-2018ish but the last five years have been much better in general I'd say. COVID-19 actually helped producers focus on quality productions and eclectic experimentation again much like the previous generation did back between 2005-2008... But whenever I revisit my 2007 lists, be that the Top 30 or the whole Yearlist, I get swept away by the timeless melodies and lasting creativity, attitude and OOMPH these productions had, still have and will have 17 years from now.
Yikes, mortality...
A little less delightful is the realization recently that when I pieced together this yearlist back in 2007... I was 17. I was half the age I am today. That lifetime fits twice across my total lifespan and that is quite the confrontation. You know, 17 years is a VERY long time. It's five years longer than I had to wait for Portugal to lift their first ever international trophy from 2004 to 2016. It's just one year short of the duration I had to wait for Metroid Dread from 2003 to 2021. That's just... Oof...
So much happened and changed in my life in that span. It kind of saddens me to realize how most of those 17 years were wasted... Wasted to being unhappy; wasted to suffering with no goals; wasted to the grand illusion that I had this obligation to make the world better and leave my mark in history; and finally 17 years wasted to living for others and continuously being dragged into their f*cking b*llsh*t I never asked to be a part of... Thank God that has changed in the last three years. It is with much joy that today I can proudly state how very grateful I am for where I've been able to steer my life. I face plenty of healthy challenges, but the baseline feels right, this is the direction I had to go.
But well, even in those dark times, how often could I resort to this list to soothe my soul? Heck, when I first posted this list back in 2014, I did it with the very idea of indulging myself in a soothing nostalgia bath to ease my ongoing private life distress the same way the list calmed me throughout the initial tough moments I was going through when it first came to be... I'll never quite grasp why out of all the years of music I've discovered and kept track of, 2007 remains so magical, so timeless and so inherently me I suppose? Is it because it was the most complete Yearlist? Because I kept track of the tunes every week so diligently? Was it because it fell right between the horrors of 2006 and the joys of 2008? Who knows...
It's kind of curious... The memories tied to this list are rooted in solitude yet my overall feeling for it is not one of sadness or despair. I spent the majority of 2007 going on walks and tram rides on my own, headphones on/earplugs in, dreaming away instantly... I was always alone. Or well, it was just me and the music and there was no one else. And there is something strangely comforting about that. In those moments, the music allowed me to dream of a brighter future. The music never judged me. The music didn't tell me what to do either. The music just, was. And the music allowed me to be fully immersed in the magic and wonder of the moment. The many sequences of consecutive legendary tracks made sure the dopamine kept
I am SO glad I've kept this list alive. Without further ado, dive with me into my youth once more, into an era long since past! Immerse yourself in my ultimate nostalgia drug! :D
