Benicio. Dutch Force. Hidden Sound System. San. Secilia. The Quest.
A.I.D.A.. Bervoets & De Goeij. Ceres. Chiqeau. Control Freaks. El Dorado. Gualagara. Jonah. Kamaya Painters. Pedro & Benno. Precious People. R.O.O.S.. Sensation. Simplistic Mind. Southsquare. SPX. System Eight. Tritone. Two Disciples. But also: Mac J. JOOP. Ronald van Gelderen. Jochen Miller. SUPERSTRINGS. GAIA. Armin van Buuren. And of course, the one and only, Rank 1

Working as/alongside these (massive) names is how Dutch Electronic Music Legend Benno de Goeij slowly made a name for himself as one of the finest Producers to ever walk this Earth. The past 27 years saw him reach several musical heights such as the three Golden Records for his work as Rank 1 (Airwave, Superstring (Rank 1 Remix) & Awakening) as well as earning a Grammy nomination alongside Trance Royalty Armin van Buuren and singer Trevor Guthrie for the massive hit 'This Is What It Feels Like' in 2013. But Benno is a man of many talents, as much commercial success as he might have had, he's can snap his fingers at any moment and drop a sudden Underground, Pure Electronic Love Letter like he did as part of GAIA in 2018-2019 for the incomparable Moons Of Jupiter live show and album. Yup, odds are if you've followed the Trance scene closely for the past few decades, you've probably heard, danced to and/or enjoyed something that Benno (co-)created. The Dutch stadium-size Anthem Trance sound would simply not have been what it is today without this man. And from September 2024 onward, the illustrious list of iconic projects he's partaken in will be expanded with a brand new entry.

Dear people, meet BnO!

I was quite surprised to see Benno tweet that he was launching a brand alias. It's something I had hoped would happen back in 2013 when I had the opportunity to chat with him! But here we are today, a new outlet for us to enjoy some tasty De Goeij music!  First, a bit of context. Unbeknownst to myself (yes I know, SHAME!), Benno and Lulleaux (/Hugo Prick) had already worked before on a few of the latter's 2017 and 2018 tracks like Contact (with Giang Pham), Tourist (with Patrick Baker), On My Lockscreen (with Attizz), Lovin' (with Glen Faria), On The Go (with Dwight Steven), Missing You (with NEIMY) and You Look Like (Sex). Benno announced he had been exploring new musical directions and The Quest (wink wink ;)) l.e.d. (okay okay I'll stop xD) to the  emergence of BnO. So what exactly did The Maestro cook for us?

01. Lulleaux, BnO & SEM - Take Me Away (Extended Mix)

The original kicks off with a very bouncy House-based bassline before it gets layered with a catchy pluck remniscint in sound of In Petto's - Toca Me. Pads swell gently in the background as this pluck takes centre stage. Then Sem Rozendaal's vocal kicks in, showering us in a nostalgic mood about good times long gone before belting out the track's title with power and melancholy. What strikes me is how the track goes from mellow and summery to slightly sad and melancholic at 01:44 when the Take Me Away's main melody is teased in the background. SEM's "Oh ohhs" in the background strengthen that homesick feeling. By the time the second verse hits, the rather playful intro vibe has made way for a full blown sense of wanting to be elsewhere. Damn, I didn't quite expect this track to hit me with the nostalgic feels! A very nice tune here, mellow in execution but surprisingly strong in emotion. In the famous words of an old buddy of ours on the AVB forum back in the day: "Me gusta mucho malto!"

02. Lulleaux, BnO & SEM - Take Me Away (Club Mix)

The club mix starts off with more energy though this version also has a bit of a subdued execution to it. This time a gentle piano eases us into SEM's vocals. The moment he sings Take Me Away, a very '90s sounding main lead swells backed by trademark rolling De Goeij snares as the drop hits us with nostalgia of a different kind: the Club Mix takes me away to another era and in the process puts a big smile on my face. I'm not sure how these guys pulled it off but that slight sadness from the original isn't present in this version. If the original is about being sad that you are where you are in life or in love, the club mix is about the thrill of being on the road, on a journey, on that ride to that somewhere else SEM refers to. It's crazy what an altered main hook and different synth sound can do for the overall mood of a track. I gotta say I dig this one a lot too! Damn you three, well done! :D

My only question in regards to this mix is... Why is it so Spotify-oriented?? The Club Mix could easily be 5 to 6 minutes long, it's too good to be so short! Curiously I only spotted the Club Mix on Beatport and Junodownload, it hasn't popped up on Spotify yet so I hold hope that means an Extended Club Mix will be released as well.

In conclusion

If you like your Electronic music mellow, with a sprinkle of late summer vibes and a good dash of powerful vocal longing for an escape, this is just the cocktail you need for your playlists. The Extended Mix goes for a bit of sadness, whilst the Club Mix goes for a more euphoric touch. The original's catchy hook and bouncy build make it a nice tune to relax to whilst the Club Mix beefs it up in all the right places without losing out on the late-summery feeling that makes the original so enjoyable. And what can I say, I am just a sucker for the Club Mix' '90s Club vibe. :D

Oh, while we're at it, might I recommend Lulleaux - On My Lockscreen too? A sweet melancholic, dreamy tune that fits with the ethos of Take Me Away despite going for a very different approach sound wise. It already proved in 2017 that Hugo and Benno make a pretty good team.
I am looking forward to the next BnO already!  :D
