Single Review: Lulleaux, BnO & SEM - Take Me Away (Rank 1 Extended Remix)

2024-10-22

The Rank 1 Remix-ography is as extensive as it is diverse. Consider these names: York. Tunnel Allstars. Mary Griffin. System F. Cygnus X. Baby D. Angelic. Chakra (albeit unreleased). Ayumi Hamasaki. Delerium feat. Rani. Gouryella (albeit unreleased). Nu NRG. Marc Aurel. JamX & De Leon. Push. Angel City. Mr. Sam feat. Kirsty Hawkshaw. ATB feat. Tiff Lacey. Ronald van Gelderen (twice). Freddie Mercury. Cosmic Gate (twice). JOOP. Alex Bartlett, Andy Guess & Anthya. Alex M.O.R.P.H.. Anton Sonin, AMX & Sari. Jochen Miller. Marcel Woods feat. MC Da Silva. Leon Bolier & Jonas Steur. Velvetine. Mat Zo. Super8 & Tab feat. Julie Thompson. Conjure One feat. Leigh Nash. Giuseppe Ottaviani feat. Eric Lumiere. Aly & Fila and JES.  And now it will be extended once more with the inclusion of Lulleaux, BnO and SEM!

To me a Rank 1 Remix is always an exciting track to look forward to: having gotten into their sound between 2003-2005, I grew up knowing these remixes to be highly varied/unique. The level of experimentation the guys showcased in their remixes felt higher, and at times, more radical than the originals that followed before or after. This obviously turned into a case of the double-edged sword since Rank 1 could pivot so far away from expected sounds or styles that they ended up disappointing me a bit (usually only at first though).

As I've grown older, I've come to have a higher appreciation for the "risk" that comes with these adventurous remixes. More often than not, they hit hard and quite frankly, ever since 2010, Rank 1 haven't missed. Even their Love Will bring It All Around Remix which I disliked a lot back in 2013 grew on me over the years as the lyrics served as a reminder to keep faith in some of the darker days I suffered through in the past. Their remixes for My Enemy and Fire Wire are still some of my favorite Rank 1 productions of all time! And the last remix they did for Aly, Fila and JES - Sunrise in 2022... Well, that one still gets plenty of love too, as if it were released this year! Rank 1's Remix form has been impeccable for a while, they are on an incredibly hot streak!

So when they casually dropped the teaser for this latest entry, I was hyper-excited. That deep, thumping bass groove and ominous echoing synth stab had me guessing at the direction they would take with this... So! What did it turn out like??

01. Lulleaux, BnO & SEM - Take Me Away (Rank 1 Extended Remix)

Man oh man, I just can't get over how CLEAN this one is. The beat is HEAVY and hits hard. A thugging, echoing industrial sound alongside a crunchy synth pad stab create a very deep and dark atmosphere. Said synthpad gives off a spacey feeling not too dissimilar from Cosmomatic its extended form. An eerie pad is added to the mix, with a bit of a theremin ring to it... It adds to the mysterious ambiance building so far. The bass gives away and allows this theremin pad full control for a bit, with filtered cymbals gentle playing alongside it. This bit feels so classic Rank 1, it's such a mood setting moment, which is best underlined by what follows next: A slightly distorted SEM starts belting out Take Me Awaaaaaaaaay, giving the track its eeriest, most dystopic feeling yet. His voice is drawn out for a bit and the backing elements slowly die down, when...

...The main lead is revealed: it's a simple variation on the original and club mix leads. It thus lives up to Rank 1's trademark Less Is More / Simplicity Is King adage. The synth sound makes me bl**dy nostalgic... It's a variant that takes me back to the days of Opus 17, Lyteo (Rank 1 Remix) and also Ronald van Gelderen's Dirty Rocker which Benno co-produced back in 2007. Some low "cinematic" saw stabs back the main lead, instantaneously changing the beforementioned eerie/dystopic feeling into an Epic mood, and one of Hope. SEM belts out another Take Me Away as the traditional Rank 1 snare roll unfolds. The track climaxes and we get a clean drop in which the melody is given every inch it needs to thrive and breathe, the percussive elements taking a brief moment before joining, before the vocal by SEM is sprinkled over the whole once more. You know? It's refreshing to hear a heavier/deeper track that doesn't resort to a monotone drops so typical of the so-called "Future Rave" or "Melodic Techno" craze of recent years: surely the scene is oversaturated with that by now? Regardless, this main segment gets to play out for quite a bit, which I really love as well: The start and end to the track come and go but the "meat" of it all is allowed time to strut its stuff.

A final snare roll and a fading SEM signal the end as the winding down stage of remix follows, one in which we get to enjoy that STOMPER of a heavy bassline some more. Damn I LOVE this groove!! And how the hell does Benno do it?? He (co-)crafts three versions of Take Me Away, yet he manages to give all three a different range of moods/emotions. All three mixes are different from one another and yet all three feel tied by a mixture of melancholia, sadness, mellowness, and euphoria...

In conclusion

During my first play of this remix, my mind went back to the 2005-2006 era of Rank 1with their gritty, Techy remixes for This Way, Lyteo, Humanity as well as the Rank 1 Dub Mix for Freddie Mercury's Love Kills. This is the fastest and deepest Rank 1 production we've had in a very long time! But I've been replaying it a lot (of course) and I must say that though it has some... Familiar Rank 1 elements to it, this remix isn't necessary a rehash of that Tech 1 style they had back then. This has something slightly more minimalistic to it whilst at the same time it's main part feels Trancier than most of those remixes were.

In terms of how deep and dark this beat hits, how heavy it THUMPS your eardrums, one could spot a similar ethos... There is no doubt this remix was made for the clubs, much like those Bangers of Yesteryear were. But this one is different somehow. There is something distinct about it, and I love it. I think Rank 1 have done a stellar job in creating a new mix for Take Me Away, making it quite the must-have package if you enjoy your Electronic Music eclectic, like yours truly does.

So I would say, go grab it while it's hot! And grab the original and club mixes too! This is a fun release and shows some of Benno's finest qualities as a top Producer.
